Thomas Van Sloten
Post doc
Dr Thomas van Sloten studied Medicine at Maastricht University and Clinical Epidemiology at VU University Amsterdam, both in the Netherlands. The focus of his research is the role of primordial prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and the contribution of vascular dysfunction to brain diseases (stroke, dementia, depression).
He did his PhD research under supervision of Prof. Coen Stehouwer at the Department of Internal Medicine of Maastricht UMC+, within CARIM. During his PhD project, Thomas also worked at the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, under supervision of Dr Launer and Dr Mitchell. Recently, he did a post-doctoral research fellowship at INSERM U970, Cardiovascular Research Center, Paris, France, under supervision of Dr Empana, Prof. Boutouyrie and Prof. Laurent.
Currently, Thomas works as a resident internal medicine and post-doctoral researcher at Maastricht UMC+. In 2018, Thomas was awarded a Veni grant by the Dutch Research Council NWO talent scheme and Dr. Dekker clinical scientist grant by the Dutch Heart Foundation. Using this grants, Thomas investigates the role of microvascular dysfunction in the development of depression in individuals with and without cardiovascular disease.
