EFSD/Sanofi grant Martijn Brouwers

Martijn Brouwers (Department of Internal Medicine, division of Endocrinology) received the ‘European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes (EFSD)/Sanofi European Diabetes Research Programme in Macrovascular Complications of Diabetes’ fellowship (230 k€). Evidence is accumulating that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease predisposes to type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis. There are, however, many different pathways that result in the accumulation of hepatic fat. This EFSD project, entitled ‘Hepatic de novo lipogenesis: the missing link between type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease’, will focus on the identification of a plasma biomarker of hepatic de novo lipogenesis, which will subsequently be measured in the Maastricht Study to examine whether the relationship between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular complications is mediated by de novo lipogenesis.
