Fatma Karapinar appointed as Professor in Medication Safety
As of 1 June 2026, Dr
Fatma Karapinar has been appointed Professor of Medication Safety at Maastricht University. Fatma has been working as a hospital pharmacist since 2014. She completed her hospital pharmacy training, PhD, epidemiology training and specialisation at OLVG in Amsterdam and has been working at Maastricht UMC+ since 2023. On 1 August 2026, she was appointed Head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Toxicology. In this role, she combines clinical care with academic work within CARIM.
Her daily responsibilities include leading the department. Her research focuses on collaboration between secondary and primary healthcare providers, including in patients with heart failure, identifying and reducing medication-related harm (e.g. readmissions and prescribing cascades), and conducting epidemiological research combining hospital data with primary care data.
As Professor of Medication Safety, Fatma will focus on clinical and practice-based research within CARIM.
