NWO refugees in science grant Mohamed Kassam
Mohamed Kassem, MD (Syrian neurosurgeon, currently BMS Master Student, Imaging specialisation, UM) and prof.dr. Eline Kooi (Dept. of Radiology) have been awarded with a grant from NWO in the program Refugees in Science. Mohamed fled his home country in 2014. Since 2016, he has been living in Maastricht. This grant will allow him to study whether advanced carotid MR imaging can be used to select patients that benefit from carotid endarterectomy to prevent a (recurrent) stroke. The project is nested in the second European Carotid Surgery Trial (ECST-2). Mohamed will get a research position of one year at CARIM. He will collaborate with the Amsterdam Medical Center, University Hospital Basel and University College London.
