Pim Dassen

Associate professor

Dr Pim Dassen graduated with specialisation in Technical Informatics at the Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule in Aachen in 1975, and after two years post-graduate research on computer coupling in Aachen, he moved to the newly started University in Maastricht. There, under the guidance of Prof. Hein Wellens, he obtained his PhD in 1983 on a thesis describing the application of computer models of cardiac reentrant arrhythmias. His research interest ranged from the (at that time fairly exotic fields of) application of artificial intelligence end expert systems in cardiology,  to the study of chaotic behavior of cardiac electrophysiological signals. In parallel to his own research, he acted as a statistical and methodological consultant for all members of the Department of Cardiology.

At the beginning of this century, his main focus slowly shifted from research to medical education  and he achieved a Master's degree in Medical Health Professions Education in 2007. He became partly responsible for coordinating education in the field of cardiology for medical students in various roles. He is currently involved in the development and execution of an international post-graduate training programme. This programme, leading to a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Cardiac Arrhythmia Management (DAS-CAM), has been developed and implemented in close cooperation with the European Society of Cardiology and the European Heart Academy.
