Post doc

Dr Philippe Vangrieken is a European Registered Toxicologist with a specialized focus on bioactive compound toxicity and vascular biology. He has studied Biomedical Sciences at Maastricht University. In 2016, he started his PhD research at the Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Gynecology at Maastricht UMC+. His PhD project titled 'Vascular complications in preeclampsia' was granted by the School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism (NUTRIM). Throughout his PhD, his research was centered on unraveling the intricate interplay of preeclampsia and its associated stressors, namely hypoxia and oxidative stress, within the placenta, and their impact on the development of vascular complications.

In 2020, he started a postdoctoral position at the laboratory of Prof. Casper Schalkwijk within the Department of Internal Medicine. Their lab has risen as a global leader in glycation research, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to this domain. In 2021, he received a 3-year personal Junior Fellowship from the Dutch Diabetes Foundation where he studied the involvement of methylglyoxal and non-enzymatic glycation in the development of vascular complications in diabetes. His project was acknowledged by the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Diabetes Onderzoek (NVDO) with the Terpstra Award in 2022 and was also selected for additional funding from the Belgian Foundation Frans Janssen in 2023. His research bridges the gap between highly technical measurements, animal research, and cohort studies.
